Michael Sampson: Layering The Figure

Michael has been the gallery's curator since 2021, and in that time he's used the space to feature artists from Ithaca and across central New York. This show puts his own work on the walls!

As curator of The Gallery at South Hill I spend alot of my time thinking about other artists and their work. Each month, whether it is a one person show, two, three or group, I am focused on what other artists do and how to best present their work. Each of the artists I have shown over the last five and a half years have influenced my own paintings and prints in some form or another, and that shows in these exhibited pieces.

Figure drawing is central in my own artistic practice, and I set up figure drawing sessions in the gallery, and outside in various locations around Ithaca during the warmer months. After twenty years of being a non-objective studio painter, I found figure drawing in 2012. Though my work is still very abstracted, each piece starts from the figure model in pose, and though my paintings and prints certainly veer off from that initial figure drawing, I like to have a base to expand on in my work.
